"Congratulations Mr.Sen, you have become the proud father of a beautiful daughter", the nurse broke the news to my father.
Daddy frowned, his face losing its color.
Grandpaa fell on the chair nearby with a loud thud. He held his head in dismay, lamenting her birth, cursing the fact that my mother couldn't bless his family with their 'Kuldeepak'.
That child was growing up silently, quite unaware of the 'sin' that she had committed.
"Aii ladki hattt. Can't you see its a boys playground? Girls not allowed. Leave!" her classmate shooed her away.
She left, hanging her head down, a Lil piece of her heart shattered.
"I want a bicycle papa, please buy me one", she clung to her father's legs and demanded for a bicycle in her child like voice.
"Get away, I don't have the money for it. May be some other time", her father said and left, not looking back at her. Her heart shattered a Lil more.
She was now a beautiful lady of 18.
Her twinkling eyes glowed with dreams.
It was the day of her boards result, the day that will decide whether or not she'll be able to give wings to her dreams.
"Maa!!!! I secured 85%!!! Now finally I can go to my dream college in Delhi! New city! New friends! Am so so happy maa!!! Dekhna, I'll make papa and you proud one day", she chirped with gleaming happiness.
"What??? Delhi? You think money is a fruit from some tree? I can't spend so much on a daughter, just get admission in some graduation course in the City College", her father exclaimed. Her wings fluttered a Lil before falling apart, they were chopped off brutally.
Days passed by.
She was doing what she was best at, adjusting.
She gave her heart and soul to her studies.
"Hey Hi! Listen, I need to ask you something. Ummm... Actually I have fallen for you. Do you love me?, the much needed words finally came from her friend, whom she loved since the day they met.
Life rolled on.
She was happy with whatever she had.
He taught her to live for her dreams once again.
"I want to study further. I want to get an MBA degree", overcoming her fears, she broke this news to her family.
Slap!!!
"Yaha khaane ke paise nahi hai, aapko aur padhna hai?
Beta please understand, you are a girl, you are a curse to this family! Just get your graduation degree and leave. Do something of your own and spare me. I have had enough problems because of you", her mother uttered those poisonous words.
She cried, she couldn't silence the cacophony of her screaming heart.
She knew her mother loved her, and she could never mean those words.
Taking out her cell phone, she dialled his number.
"WILL YOU PLEASE STOP CALLING ME? YAAR CHAHTI KYA HO? Just leave me, live your life! And be happy. Spare me. The future beholds NOTHING for us." The line went dead.
Her world fell apart.
Failure engulfed her.
This was it, she gave up.
She scratched herself, venting out all her frustration at once.
The sight of her body oozing out blood, relieved her.
With trembling hands, she wrote "What Was My Fault?" on the mirror and breathed her last.
It was her funeral.
People draped in white paid her a visit to pray for her peace.
"Beta, why did you do this? Didn't you know you are your daddy's princess?"
"She was the best girl in the school. We always wanted her to play basketball with us because having her in the team meant a sure shot win", her classmate said in a low voice.
"She was the backbone of the family. I could never manage to wake up early in the morning without her shouting 'wake up grandpaa, time to jog!'", that was her grandfather's words.
"She was the BEST. I loved her with all my heart. Don't know why she did this to herself, I'll miss her", the love of her life said.
She lied peacefully in her coffin overhearing the conversations that followed, laughing at the double standards of the society.
She wanted to wake up, to face them once again, and to ask them to stop faking the love she was deprived of.
But her soul had given up, it had released itself from the cage.
The soul, casting a last glance at its cage moved towards her mother who was lying unconscious, near the coffin.
"Don't cry maa, forgive me, if you can. I loved you, and will miss you the most. You know what all I faced, and you should be glad that finally I won, I could free both of us from the pain that this society gave us. Please take care of yourself. And pray that I meet you again, somewhere, someday, where my birth will be cherished. And I will no longer be a burden on anyone", she gave her a goodbye kiss.
And she disappeared in the thin air, gliding up higher and higher.
